The Narrating Sessions
Learn to narrate books aloud, with a voice for every character.
What is The Narrating Sessions?
The Narrating Sessions helps you practise reading books aloud the way audiobook narrators do. Record a take in your browser and get measured feedback on your pace, pauses, pitch range, and accuracy to the text, plus how distinct each character’s voice sounds from the others. Your coach then reviews the take and suggests what to practise next.
Something to read
- Studio Library: original drills and scenes for breath, diction, pacing, emotion, character voices, and switching between speakers in dialogue
- Classics Shelf: more than 1,500 narration-sized scenes from public-domain novels and short stories, ranked by how much dialogue they contain, each linked to LibriVox recordings of the same book
- My scripts: paste pages from any book, and The Narrating Sessions marks up who is speaking from tags like “said Mr. Darcy”
See how each take went
- A voice map and pitch contour showing each character’s pitch, pace, and loudness
- Scores for how distinct each pair of voices is, and whether a voice drifted from line to line
- Text accuracy, so you can see words you skipped or changed
- A self-assessment after each take, so you can compare how it felt with how it measured
Build your Voice Book
Plan a voice for each character — pitch, pace, energy, accent, texture, and attitude — and record a voice anchor. Later takes are compared against the anchor, so you can tell when Elizabeth starts sounding like Mrs. Bennet.
Practise with a coach
- Prep notes for each piece: tone, pacing, suggested voices, tricky words, and key moments
- Take reviews with strengths, improvements tied to moments in the text, notes on each character, and the one thing to focus on next
- Practice plans of 20–35 minutes built around the skills you most need to work on
